It is said that the image of the Madonna, a fifteenth-century terracotta, was found in the bed of the Santerno river by Ser Antonio Camangi, who then had it placed in the private altar of his family. The festival was established on 9 June 1631 with the so-called "holy resolution" of the City Council as a solemn vow of thanks to the Madonna "dei Camangi" for having saved the town from the plague.
Since 1631 the feast has taken place every year and, during the solemn mass, the resolution is still read from the original manuscript.
