Cargèse is known for its two churches, one Greek Orthodox and one Roman Catholic, located opposite each other, both situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Sagone. The Greek church, built between 1852 and 1870, is a living symbol of tradition in the town. Services and ceremonies follow almost entirely the rites of Athens and Constantinople. The Roman Catholic church, L'Assomption, was built starting in 1825.
