"Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación" - After the reconquest of Málaga in 1487 by the Catholic Monarchs Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, the mosque that used to stand on the site of the current cathedral and of which only the inner courtyard with the orange trees remains was converted into a Christian church. It was consecrated under the title Santa María de la Encarnación (Saint Mary of the Incarnation). Although the original plans had included two towers, only one was completed later due to a lack of money, which gave the cathedral its popular name "La Manquita" - "One-armed lady".
As a result of the 254-year construction phase up to 1782, the church consists of a mixture of different styles. The predominant style is the Renaissance, but it also contains elements of Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassicism.

The Catedral de la Encarnación is located downtown, very close to the port. The Christian cathedral was built in 1528 on the foundations of a mosque. The building plans called for two bell towers. However, the money was only enough for the construction of one tower during the 254-year construction phase.
