Beech trees are deciduous trees that can grow up to 40 meters tall. Its bark is gray and smooth and only rarely shows a small bark formation in old age, it therefore belongs to the periderm trees. The thin, twisting twigs have a brown bark.

When artists such as Louis Douzette, Paul Flickel or Paul Müller-Kaempff discovered this piece of forest for themselves around 1870/1880, the old trees, most of which can only be recognized today as rotting remains, were still in full sap. In other words: When the artists lived out their creativity in the Darßwald and captured the beauty of the trees for all eternity, the place looked very different than it does today. Located not far from Prerow and easily accessible, there were incomparable, unique motifs, especially on a full moon. One of the pictures, namely "Buchenwald near Prerow" by Paul Flickel from 1886, even made it into the Berlin National Gallery and can be admired there.
