El Cid lived with Jimena and their daughters during a part of his exile in the monastery of San Pedro Cardeña. In 1102 his remains were transferred to the Cardenian monastery. Here they say that his embalmed body remained for some years and sat on a bench in the presbytery. Legend has it that his famous horse, Babieca, is buried in the front yard where two elm trees grow.

Although El Cid never lived in San Pedro de Cardeña, his wife Jimena and his daughters may have, but it is not known for sure. The remains of the cid remained in the monastery from 1102 to 1921, being looted during the French occupation. Outside and at the entrance to the convent there is a commemorative stone where the remains of his horse are "believed" to be buried. But the latter should not be true either. It is still a monolith in memory of his horse.

An interesting visit to the church, the royal pantheon and the cloister of the martyrs, whose name comes from the martyrdom of the monks by the Muslims around the 10th century.

In the surroundings the largest tertiary fossil site.

There are many historical inaccuracies about this mystical Spanish Trappist abbey. About 200 monks were murdered by the Moors and the Abbey was set on fire. A lot of history was also lost. Source Wikipedia.
