Castello di Santa Caterina, Favignana. The castle is situated on the highest point of the island, on Monte Santa Caterina (310 meters above sea level). The castle and the mountain in all their glory look best seen from the nearby marina. During the reign of the Bourbons, the fortress became a prison for political convicts and is therefore seen in the history of Italy as a symbol of the struggle for freedom and unification. The castle can only be reached on foot, along a stone path that leads to its walls.
