Wayside shrine with fresco paintings in 4 niches that point to the 4 cardinal directions. Memorial to the year 1636, when the plague raged here in the Funes Valley.
Wonderful rest stop with an all-round view - especially of the Geisler peaks!

Text on the explanatory board on site: “In the years 1634 to 1637 the plague raged throughout Tyrol, including in Villnöß. The memory of this terrible plague was kept alive with the construction of this wayside shrine in 1636.
According to tradition, the limit was set at this place up to which the (Berger) people from St. Magdalena, where the epidemic was particularly severe, were allowed to go out without infecting the people from the outer valley. The church service was also held here, which the residents of St. Magdalena were able to attend at an appropriate distance.
From the original wayside shrine in 1637, only the architectural and decorative paintings uncovered in 2003 remain. There may have originally been painted wooden panels in the niches, as no traces of paint from fresco paintings could be found on the original plaster during examinations. Today's depictions (fresco paintings) come from the priest painter Johann Paptist Oberkofler from the Ahrntal (first half of the 20th century) and depict St. Roch in the east, St. Sebastian in the north, St. Florian in the west and St .Katharina in the southern niche.
The Villnöß riflemen carried out the restoration of this memorial in 2003 and are thus keeping the memory of the plague period alive.”
