The drinking water dam, which was built in the Riveris valley, has been supplying the city of Trier with water from the Hochwald since 1958. The 50 m high dam is impressive, the maximum volume of the reservoir is 5 million m³. The guided tours offered free of charge by Stadtwerke Trier are very interesting. The difference in height between the dam and the city of Trier is so great that the water flows with its own gradient. While the Roman aqueduct ran along the flanks of the valley, the Riveris water takes the shortest route and therefore has to be channeled through tunnels twice. The first starts right at the dam and ends after 1700 m on the right-hand slope of the Ruwer valley above Sommerau. The entrance to the second tunnel is on the left side of the Ruwertal near Gutweiler. After 1200 m, the water is routed in an underground pipe to the filter system near Irsch, from where the cleaned water is fed into the municipal water network.Technical data of the dam:Dam: 350,000 m³ slope and valley gravel
Dam height: 50 m, dam width: 178 m
Content: 5 million m³ drinking waterThe circular route is closed to traffic and invites you to contemplative walks. There is a large hiking car park below the dam. There is an overgrown protection zone between the paths and the reservoir to protect the water from contamination. Swimming and water sports are not allowed.
