The upper gate is part of the 15th century fortification. It is considered Gemmrigheim's landmark next to the well-known coat of arms. In 1817, the community sold this gatehouse until it was bought back in 1957. Until the 19th century, this gate tower was provided with gates, which were closed at night. The gates served until the forties as protection against flotsam at high tide of the Neckar. The former Gothic archway had to be enlarged in 1952 and adapted to the increasing bus and heavy traffic, which led until 1974 through this gatehouse. In the historic building is today an apartment.

The medieval city gates, the Besigheim and Ottmarsheim city gates, are among the town's attractions. Their names indicate in which direction one is moving when walking through the archway. (Of course only if you are moving out of town.)

Worth seeing in Gemmrigheim are the two medieval gates (Besigheimer Tor and Ottmarsheimer Tor), as well as the town center with some nicely renovated old half-timbered houses, including the town hall. A third gate (Kirchheimer Tor) was already demolished in 1827.
