The mighty 79 meter high tower stands on a square plan; it rises free-standing on the southern side of the chancel. The walls are divided by pointed arch windows. The spire is octagonal. The largest of the six bells, cast by the Löffler brothers in 1526, is popularly known as the "Lananer Mooskuh".[6] With the next three bells from the years 1558, 1586 and 1552, it forms the largest historical bell ensemble in South Tyrol. Two more bells were purchased in 1932; the smaller serves as a death knell.

The patronage "Maria (or in another spelling:) Assumption of Mary" of this church in Niederlana refers to one of the many memorial or festival days in honor of the Mother of God Mary. It goes back to the festival of her physical assumption into heaven, which the church celebrates annually on August 15th.
In many rural areas it is customary for bundles of herbs (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) to be collected by the population on this day and blessed in the festival service.

The parish church was consecrated in 1492. A particular attraction is the late Gothic winged altar by Hans Schnatterpeck. The altar features an unusually rich variety of figures. It is 14.1 m high from the floor to the highest finial, making it one of the largest Gothic altarpieces in the entire Alpine region. The church can only be visited during guided tours, and a donation of four euros is expected.
