A functioning network of three mill streams has been documented for Bad Langensalza since the Middle Ages, which were fed with water from the Salza and once enabled the operation of 27 mills in front of and in the town. When the city announced a "competition for the design of public space, especially in the area of the market church and the two squares Kornmarkt and Töpfermarkt" in 1997, the topic "water in the old town" was taken up as a design element of urban renewal. The redesign of the watercourses in the historic old town as open water channels and partly also as covered channels makes the historic town of Bad Langensalza particularly worth experiencing. The city of Bad Langensalza was awarded the "Thuringian Landscape Architecture Prize 2000" for the successful execution.
