Embark on an easy hiking adventure along the South West Coast Path: Berry Head Circuit, a rewarding loop that spans 4.1 miles (6.6 km). You will experience panoramic views across Tor Bay and Lyme Bay, often stretching towards Portland on clear days. This route involves a gentle elevation gain of 378 feet (115 metres) and typically takes around 1 hour and 48 minutes to complete, making it a perfect choice for a manageable coastal walk.
When planning your visit, you will find many paths within the Berry Head National Nature Reserve are surfaced and relatively level, especially on the main headland plateau. These sections are suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and mobility scooters. However, be aware that some extended parts beyond the immediate headland can be uneven or include steps, and a strenuous 1.5-mile section after the Southern Fort is not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Parking is generally available, and you can find a café and visitor centre in one of the old guardhouses.
As you hike, you will pass through the Berry Head National Nature Reserve, where dramatic cliffs rise 200 feet above sea level. Keep an eye out for the historic Napoleonic Forts and the iconic Berry Head Lighthouse, which, despite being Britain's shortest, is one of its highest. The reserve is also a haven for wildlife; you might spot nesting seabirds like guillemots, and even sea mammals such as porpoises and dolphins in the waters below.
