The water tower was built by the master mason Wolfgang Khranlachner in 1577 on behalf of the city chamber office. Inside the tower there was a hoist and a water tank, from which the water drawn from the mill stream was conducted through pipes to individual town houses and the two city fountains on the town square. According to legend, the water wheels were said to have been operated by prisoners.
