Monument to Vincenzo Bellini

The monument was built by the sculptor Giulio Monteverde on behalf of the municipality of Catania and was inaugurated in September 1882. It was probably unclear for a long time where exactly the statue should be placed. Some wanted to place it in front of the Massimo Bellini Theater, then under construction, others on the site of the Elephant Fountain in Piazza Duomo. Eventually the proposal to erect the statue in Stesicoro Square prevailed. The statue seems to be in an almost "strategic" position: Vincenzo Bellini appears to be looking straight at the saint during the celebrations for the city's patron saint (Sant'Agata). The composer is said to have been very devoted to the saint during his youth.
