In the forest you see a variety of ditches and earthen walls. Digged by hand about 200 years ago, as seed and planting beds. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the then owners of Huis Bergh, the German noble family von Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen, were able to acquire a large contiguous forest area. The markebos, then nothing more than overgrown heathland with a tree here and there. Here, the reforestation of Scots pine for mining timber and oak for coppicing wood for tannic acid production was started energetically. Later, other tree species such as Norway spruce and European larch were also introduced and this new form of forest management was applied. Immediately take the first path left and then right again. Ignore a side path on your left.
