It is located in the highest part of the town of Preixana, on the Sitjar hill. The church was affected by the earthquakes that occurred in 1427 and 1428. It is in the late Gothic style of the 16th century and the façade is Renaissance style.

Santa Maria de Preixana is the parish church of Preixana (Urgell) included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. In May 2017 it was declared a Cultural Property of National Interest, in the Historical Monument category.
