Salaparuta is located in the valley of the Belice river, positioned on a hill 385 meters above the sea level. The town was hit, in 1968, by a violent earthquake that hit the entire Belice valley, destroying the city. The ruins remain which testify to life before 1968; the new inhabited center was rebuilt a few kilometers away from the original center starting from the seventies.
