When Jourdain de L'Isle signed the deed of foundation of the bastide village in 1284, he paid tribute to the aunt from whom he had inherited property and land: Vianne van Gontaut-Biron, eldest daughter of the landlord of Montgaillard, whose castle still stands over Vianne reigns.
Jourdain de L'Isle could never have imagined that his decision sealed a special status among the many bastide villages in Lot-et-Garonne; the only one with a maiden name.
