This vast cemetery is located on land which became a perpetual concession made by France to the United States. In other words, the United States of America owns the cemetery on a territory where French law applies. It was commissioned in 1956. It is divided into ten squares of white marble steles. Seen from the sky, the cemetery forms an immense cross. Resting here are the bodies of 9,387 people, mainly who died on the day of the landing or in the weeks that followed. 307 could not be identified.
There is also on the site a garden of the missing, numbering 1,557, whose remains could not be identified.
