A fairly large herd of Moorschnucke sheep can be found all around near the south tower. They serve to protect the moor. Sheep grazing, which was abandoned around 40 years ago, was resumed in the summer of 2000. The Moorschnucken are best suited in raised bogs to specifically reduce birch growth and moor grass.
The sound of the Moorschnucken biting in the moor is simply terrific.

The Moorschnucken come from the moor areas of Lower Saxony. It is believed that the breed was created by crossing a polled plain-wool country sheep breed into the population of gray horned Heidschnucke sheep. It has been kept in the moors of northern Germany for centuries. In 1922 the white polled sheep were separated from the white horned Heidschnucke and henceforth called Moorschnucke (source: wikipedia)

In 1998, NABU acquired a disused sheep barn on the southern edge of the "Großes Torfmoor" nature reserve with financial support from the NRW Foundation and sponsors.

In the following years, NABU members worked hard to restore the old barn, which had been closed for years, and the yard and open spaces. In total, this required more than 2,500 hours of work. Even during the construction work, NABU was looking for a shepherd who was prepared to take on the challenge of grazing the moor with Moorschnucke sheep. After two years, the time had come: the sheep barn had been built, a shepherd had been found, and the first Moorschnucke sheep could move in. After the sheep farm had successfully started, a herd of a cross between Moorschnucke sheep and a Scottish breed of sheep was built up alongside the Moorschnucke sheep. These were still suitable for looking after the moor, but on the other hand, they were more marketable due to their higher weight. In addition, the expansion of the sheep farm was able to begin with funding from the district and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

A shed was built right next to the stable in 2001. It is used to store roughage for the sheep and as a parking space for agricultural machinery. The winter feed for the sheep is obtained from the pastures in the NSG by mowing for one or two years. The shed also contains the NABU depot. Various machines for landscape maintenance are housed here, materials are stored and a workshop is operated.
