Best Mountain Biking Routes to Convent of the Passionist Fathers of Monte Argentario

Tips

  • The complex constitutes the mother house of the Congregation of the Passionist Fathers and is made up of a convent and the church. Construction work began in 1733 and was completed in 1737. The façade, built in 1856, has a neoclassical appearance. The interior preserves some important works: the Madonna and Child handing over the project of the convent to Saint Paul of the Cross, by Pietro Aldi (1880), which can be taken as a manifesto of the congregation; the "Presentation of Mary in the Temple", by Sebastiano Conca; the "Madonna and Child holding the Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph in the background", by Pompeo Batoni.
The image called "Madonna di Monte Argentario" from the Roman school of the 18th century is very venerated. On the altar of the right transept there is a canvas with an image of the Magdalene from the 18th century and, on the left altar a Saint Michael, a copy of the subject of the same name by Guido Reni from the Capuchin Church in Rome.
In the crypt there are both the statue of the founder of the order (in travertine) and a bas-relief, also in travertine, representing the arrival at the Argentario of San Paolo della Croce. Finally, inside the church you can admire a bronze urn with the remains of the young passionist the venerable Galileo Nicolini by the sculptor Tito Amodei[1].
On December 12, 2000, surprisingly and without warning, to the amazement and emotion of the religious people present, Pope John Paul II stopped to pray in the convent church.[2] The place was also particularly loved by Susanna Agnelli (mayor of Monte Argentario from 1974 to 1984), so much so that, following her express wish, she wanted her funeral to be celebrated there.[3]

  • The Convent of the Passionist friars is located on the top of the Argentario. Here you will find the typical herbal bitters of the Passionist friars for sale.
Opposite is the self-service restaurant in the middle of the Mediterranean scrub with typical Maremma cuisine.
Continuing along the road you will arrive at the top from which you can enjoy a fabulous view of the sea and from where you can see the islands of Giannutri and Giglio.
