Rothesütte is the northernmost location in Thuringia and is located in the Southern Harz Nature Park.
The history of Rothesütte begins in the 17th century. At that time, the area of the later town belonged to the Hohnstein Forest. This fell to the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode when it was divided in 1645. On the three-country stone erected in 1749/1750 on the Großer Ehrenberg northwest of the town, this affiliation is marked on the Rothesütte side with "GW" for "Count Wernigerode Forest". The road from Nordhausen to Benneckenstein led through the Hohnstein Forest. There was a cattle yard on the top of a red puddle (called "Sütte"). The founding of the town is given in a source for 1679. In 1682, with the permission of the Count of Stolberg-Wernigerode, a woodcutter opened an inn "in the red Sütte".
