Construction began, probably at the end of the 14th century, replacing an old baptismal church. The choir was completed between 1410 and 1420. After the nave was completed, the church was consecrated in 1464. Choir arch crucifix by Hans Leinberger around 1525.
After damage in the Thirty Years' War and the city fire of 1648, the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style from 1668 to 1689. The Gothic vault ribs were replaced by stucco ornaments. The Gothic altars were lost except for a few sculptures.
