It was a dam (a masonry regulator with sluice gates) designed to control and regulate the flow of water from the lakes of Chiusi and Montepulciano into the Canale Maestro, making it navigable in the event of flooding. It had three openings for the passage of boats.
Its function as a regulator ceased in 1944, when it was destroyed during the war, but its remains have been restored and are now located along the Sentiero della Bonifica (Reclamation Trail).
