The Lievekaai is a cobbled street on the former medieval port of Ghent, which was located here on the Lieve. Many of the houses on the Lievekaai still bear witness to this past.
Where the weeping willows are now, there used to be a turning basin where large ships could turn and where there was also an unloading crane. The turning basin was filled in around 1830.
The little square along the Lieve that was created by the damping is now the Children's Rights Square, where it is good to relax in the shade of the Weeping Willows.
