The island has been inhabited since the 5th millennium BC, as evidenced by remains of the Ozieri culture. Domus de Janas and menhirs also bear witness to Neolithic settlement. Nuraghes, such as the Su Niu de Su Crobu (Crow's Nest), date back to the Bronze Age.

Sant'Antioco is the fourth largest island in Italy immediately after Elba, it is located near its sister island of San Pietro and together they form the Sulcis archipelago.
The island is largely of volcanic origin. The coast of the island is mainly rocky and in its western part it is characterized by vertical or very steep walls characterized by caves and some inlets. The beaches are few but very large.
