The fortified church, built in an elevated position around 1300, is located right next to the palace complex of Augustenau Castle. The mighty choir tower is the oldest part of the complex. The nave had to be renovated for the first time in 1457 and was extended by another transept in 1606 and 1923. In 1756 the choir tower was given its half-timbered top. The basic features of the interior of the fortified church were already laid out in 1764. The interior conveys an overwhelming spatial experience. The high nave, spanned by a wooden barrel vault, is surrounded by a double gallery which continues on a single storey in the wide transept arms. The choir, which dates from the Middle Ages, is opened by a pointed triumphal arch. Particularly worthy of mention are the wall paintings from the early 14th century and the interesting inscription and coat of arms gravestones from the 16th/17th centuries. Here, special attention should be paid to the gravestone of the troop leader Georg von Reckerode from 1558. Source: herleshausen.de/verzeichnis/objekt.php?mandat=188347

The evangelical castle church of St. Bartholomew is situated on a hill, together with the vicarage, within the surrounding castle wall. The ring of walls is surrounded by loopholes and a semi-circular shell tower on the east side. The mighty early Gothic choir tower of the former fortified church was built around 1300. The pointed arch portal on the west side dates from 1521. The church in Herleshausen is an open church, unfortunately it is closed at the moment (September 2022) due to construction work.
