The monumental structure that stands on the shores of Lake Averno is traditionally called the Temple of Apollo due to the identification of the lake itself with the gate of the Underworld and the consequent connection with the oracle of the dead, the Cumaean Sibyl and the cult of Apollo. . It is no coincidence, in fact, that the tunnel excavated in the nearby tuff that connects the Avernus to the Lucrino is called the Grotta della Sibilla, again in the name of the frantic search for Virgilian settings conducted during the first decades of the 1900s in the Campi Flegrei. The monument, far from the typology of the Templar buildings, is nothing more than the frigidarium of a thermal complex that extended to the shores of the lake, probably to exploit its beneficial waters.
