From Unken or Reith (Austria) you climb in 3 hours (9.7km) through forest and meadows up to the Reiter Alm, which you pass until you reach the new Traunsteiner Hut at the north-east end. You can live here! From the balcony you have a wonderful view of the Alm and the peaks of the Reiter Alpe behind it, day and night. If you're smart, you'll book in for 2 days, because the real highlight is the hike over the peaks of the Reiter Alpe: Edelweißlahnerkopf, Weitschartenkopf, Häuselhorn, Wagendrischelhorn or Stadelhorn. The hike takes about 6-7 hours. Since most visitors only climb for one day, you have a fair chance of having the mountain panorama to yourself.

Back to life: The Traunsteiner Hut has double rooms, four-bed rooms and a mattress dormitory. The food is organic and very good.
