Fortification located on top of a hill, about two kilometers north of the town of Vilajuiga. The primitive enclosure dates from the 10th century, although remains of previous settlements have been found. It was the seat of the diplomatic archive of the county and expanded and reformed between the 11th and 14th centuries.

Originally it was built as an isolated fortification, which was enlarged and modified over the centuries. In the 15th century, an oval wall and an interior construction in the form of a large rectangular room were added. There are also remains of a small bell tower and two watchtowers, all built on top of the original 10th-century buildings.

It is a defensive construction that has seen sieges, battles and occupations throughout its history. Battles such as that of the counts of Ampurias and those of Barcelona (12th century), sieges such as that of the crusade against the crown of Aragon (13th century) or occupations such as that of Napoleonic troops (19th century). In the latest excavations it has been discovered that it was also a point of republican resistance in the Spanish civil war.

If you don't want to go about 400 m along the National Road, there is a path, although it is only for mountain bikes and you will still have to push through certain rather complex sections.
