The Raso de Portillo Lagoons are a valuable natural and ornithological resource that offers a vital habitat for various species of birds in the region. 🌿🦆
Until the 19th century, this area was a wetland that covered 1900 hectares. However, it was gradually dried to favor crop fields and prevent diseases such as malaria transmitted by insects1. The current lagoons are the result of a restoration carried out starting in 2012 by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation during its II Riverside Restoration Plan. This body is also responsible for regulating the area.
