The Mark rises at the Zandvenheide in Koekhoven, a Belgian hamlet near Merksplas. The source area of the Mark, the Turnhouts Vennengebied, forms the watershed between the Maas (Dommel and Mark) and the Scheldt (Nete).[1] Via Hoogstraten and Minderhout, where the Mark forms the national border between Belgium and the Netherlands for a while, the stream finally flows into Dutch territory at border post 218 just south of the Markbrug between Meersel-Dreef and Galder.
