Indeed, the stone bridge was destroyed by the Axis forces (mainly Germany – Italy – Japan) to protect their retreat and make the advance of the Allied forces more difficult. After the war, a wooden footbridge 40 m long, resting on 7 posts, was installed on the position of the local road Saint-Marcoux.

In November 1955, the footbridge was definitively replaced by a metal footbridge, whale (whale) from the Mulberry B port of Arromanches (a town located in the department of Calvados), used to supply the Allied troops in the days following the landing operations. in Normandy (June 1944).

Called today “Pont d’Arromanches”, these footbridges are elements of the floating ways. They made it possible to connect the quays of the artificial port to the coast.

These elements, 24.4m long and weighing 28 tons, rested on concrete or steel floats fixed to the footbridge at the location of the two current abutments.

There are only about ten Arromanches bridges still in service in France. The Territory of Belfort is lucky to have two on its soil: that of Chaux which allows you to cross the Savoureuse, and that of Foussemagne which spans the Saint-Nicolas river.
