The Natura 2000 area extends in a band around 40 km long from Neumarkt southwards through the towns of Deining and Holnstein to Dietfurt an der Altmühl and from Wissing to Breitenbrunn. Numerous rivers and ditches flow through the Natura 2000 area. The main bodies of water are the Unterbürger Laber, Weiße Laber, Breitenbrunner Laber and Wissinger Laber. In addition to these main bodies of water, there are a number of smaller ditches and streams in the area.

In addition to the natural highlights, there is also a cultural and historical peculiarity to be found on the White Laber, the so-called Laberschwalle. These structures made of stone pillars, which span the river with up to four pillars, serve as a crossing, but were previously used primarily for irrigation and fertilization. The farmers, who formed a cooperative, were able to use wooden panels to accumulate water and direct it into their meadows in order to enable the floodplain meadows to be mowed a second time in midsummer.

Laberschwalle are historic irrigation systems and are popular photo subjects today. 24 of these historic systems still exist along the Weiße and Wissinger Laber.

They are attractive points of contact in the natural landscape both in summer and winter and are culturally and historically important - the Laberschwalle. This made it possible to achieve targeted flooding of the floodplain meadows. This enabled farmers to mow a second time in midsummer.
