The impressive glacial lake was formed approximately 10,000 to 16,000 years ago by the activities of the Glockner mountain range. This natural gem, which once extended as far as Saalfelden, played a significant historical role: In winter, the lake served as a source of ice, which was used as a coolant for icehouses – including those of German breweries – and transported by rail.
