Coming from Wollin and working in Wittenberg for a long time, Johannes Bugenhagen was not only a supporter but also a personal friend of Martin Luther. Since interest in the Reformation began in Hamburg in the early 16th century, the scholar Bugenhagen was brought to the Hanseatic city in 1526. Here, as before in Braunschweig, he was supposed to create a new church order.
Shortly before Bugenhagen left Hamburg again, he was able to set up Hamburg's first public Latin school in the vacated St. John's monastery: the Johanneum. He thus became a co-founder of the modern Hamburg school system.

This sculpture by Johannes Bugenhagen is also in front of the Johanneum. Initially, the figure - designed by Engelbert Pfeiffer - stood in the courtyard of the school, which was then in the middle of Hamburg's city center. It was erected on Bugenhagen's 400th birthday, on June 24, 1885. The initiative came from former students of the Johanneum.

From 1912 to 1914 the Johanneum on Maria-Louisen-Straße received a new building, designed by Fritz Schumacher. Since the school has its new headquarters in Winterhude, the monument has stood in front of the school building.

The sculpture shows Bugenhagen with a roll of paper in his hand. This is the Hamburg Church Order with seal. Viewed from the front, the name Johannes Bugenhagen is written on the base of the statue. On the left side it is written:

      Scholae Johanneae
      Confectioners
      Cives Hamburgenses

The date of construction is carved into the stone on the right side of the base and the occasion:

      Anno MDCCCLXXXV
      The June XXIV
      Natali Quadringesimo
