    river course

The Ölbach rises from three individual springs southwest of Oerlinghausen at a height of 165 m above sea level. NHN in the Senne in a deepened box valley in the Ölbachtal nature reserve with Augustdorf dunes. As is typical for all Senne streams, the Ölbach follows the southwestern flattening of the Teutoburg Forest in an almost parallel course. Over the years, the springs have shifted further and further down the stream, which is why a dry valley now follows above the actual source area.[4]

After taking up the Westerholter Bach, the Ölbach first flows through the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock. In Stukenbrock there is a dam in order to be able to cover ponds and tributaries, which were created in 1975 and are now partly under nature protection, with water for the purpose of fish farming. After crossing the federal autobahn 33, the water flows through Schloss Holte. To the west of the village there are more standing waters that are fed by the Ölbach. First, there are two collection ponds that served as a water reservoir for the former Holter ironworks. Shortly thereafter, the Ölbach reaches the Holter Castle, whose moats it also supplies with water. At this point, the water has already entered the Holt Forest and shortly thereafter passes the 1000-year-old oak tree located there.

The Ölbach then flows centrally through the Holter Forest and there, already in the urban area of Verl, joins the Landerbach. In the further course, Verl flows through north of the town center and then splits at the level of the Verler See in the district of Sürenheide into an old branch (Alter Ölbach) and a newer branch (Neuer Ölbach). Southwest of this quarry pond, which was created in the 1980s and is fed by the Ölbach, the course of the river forms the border of the city of Gütersloh in a total of 7.5 km long and exclusively rural section. First it is the border to the town of Verl and then to the town of Rietberg, where the Ölbach passes north of the Rietberg district of Varensell. Finally, the creek forms the border between Gütersloh and Rheda-Wiedenbrück before it completely enters Rheda-Wiedenbrücker Boden in the area of the Lintel district at the level of the flow of the A2.
