Spyros Kayales is a hero of the 1897 revolution. He became famous for his bravery in taking up the Greek flag as a living flagpole after the flagpole was destroyed by a cannonball. Through his courage, a truce was called by the Italian fleet, which led to a diplomatic victory for Greece. The memorial is meant to commemorate that.
