A lovely legend surrounds Beggar's Bridge, a packhorse bridge built in 1619 using stone from a previous 14th century river crossing.

Thomas Ferris, son of a poor farmer, fell in love with the Anges Richardson, the daughter of a rich man. Her father disapproved of Thomas, as poor as he was, so in response Thomas set sail to the Caribbean to find his own riches.

But it wasn't only Agnes' father who separated the lovers. Thomas was thwarted in his attempts to say goodbye to her as the River Esk was in flood meaning he couldn't get over to Glaisdale where she lived.

Thomas did indeed make big money and not only did he eventually become Sherriff and then Mayor of Hull, he also married his love, Agnes.

Legend has it that Thomas Ferris built this bridge so that no two lovers would ever be kept apart as he and Agnes had been.
