Lendal Bridge was built to replace the ferry service which became overcrowded with the advent of the railway bringing more visitors to York. The ferryman received 15 pounds and a horse and cart in compensation.
The ironwork on the bridge depicts the white Yorkshire rose, the lions of England, the symbol of the diocese of York, the York coat of arms and a V&A to commemorate Victoria and Albert.
The bridge crosses the river Ouse and gives good views of the city walls on its south western side and Lendal Tower on the north eastern side, once part of the city's medieval defences, now luxury self catering accommodation.
