The stone pyramid above Auendorf was built as a memorial to Albert Leo Schlageter. In the 1920s, during the "Ruhr Battle", this terrorist attacked French occupying forces. Schlageter was caught, sentenced to death by a French court-martial and shot dead. The National Socialists celebrated Schlageter as champion and martyr. In mid-May 1933, just after the "seizure of power", the Auendorfer local council agreed to the request of the local NSDAP to erect a monument for Schlageter. It was executed in pyramidal form approximately six meters high of natural stones.

At the viewpoint over Auendorf today a barbecue is created, the former memorial plaque on the stone pyramid is missing. But it also lacks any reference to the problematic history of this monument. According to Wikipedia, about 100 Schlageter monuments in Germany still exist around 20.

Really a nice place for a short break, even for barbecues or just to enjoy the view ;-)
