Jan and Gret have long since become the landmark of St. Peter-Ording, next to the stilt houses. The sculpture on the market square in St. Peter's village was erected in 1994. They represent the "Lütte Lüüd", which means something like the small or simple people who used to live here. That was before tourism came to town.
The soil is poor in nutrients and so it is still difficult to grow on it today. Because of this, St. Peter-Ording was long regarded as a poor village, where only simple and poor people lived. The fact that the soil was not fertile and consists mainly of sand did not make life easy and people had to fish to keep themselves afloat.
The sculpture shows how the man "Jan" pricks the "Bütt" (flatfish) with the "prigg" (fork) and the woman "Gret" fishes the "porrn" (crabs) with the "gliep" (sliding net). In addition to mussels, porrn and bütt were popular dishes from the sea. The figures are framed in a fountain, which makes the sculpture appear even more authentic.
