Best Hiking Routes to Gorges of Celano

Tips

  • Deep incision with overhanging stone walls up to 200 m high. Entering the Celano Gorges will be accessing a crystallized world, where trees, stone and time are masters.

  • The Gole di Celano (Celano's gorges) are located within the Regional Natural Park of Sirente - Velino. Digged for more than 4 kilometers from the river La Foce, they separate Mount Sirente and Mount Tino (also called Serra di Celano), representing an imposing erosion of the central Apennines in Italy. Its rocky walls measure, in the deepest area, almost 200 meters high. The average width of the gorge is about 5-6 meters, with narrow passages of 3 meters. The gorges are passable and can be visited by hikers either uphill coming from Celano or down from Ovindoli starting from the high Valle d'Arano.
