In 1878, 100,000 marks were approved for the continuation of the Andernach-Niedermendig railway line to Mayen. This enabled the railway line to be expanded quickly, so that in May/June 1880 the line was opened first for passenger traffic and later for freight traffic. Due to the economic success of the railway line, the line was continued to Gerolstein. In 1895, a 20-meter-high railway viaduct was built over the Nette valley in order to be able to continue the railway line as the "Eifelquerbahn" via Mayen-West, Kaisersesch, Ulmen and Daun in the direction of Gerolstein. Due to the effects of the war, the six-arch railway viaduct had to be rebuilt after the war. (Source: kuladig.de)
After the decline of the branch lines in the 1970s and 1980s, the cessation of passenger traffic on the entire route on December 9, 1983 and the final closure of the Koblenz-Lützel-Mayen Ost railway line on September 15, 2003, a railway cycle path (Maifeld-Radweg) was created , which still leads over the viaduct today.
