Beautifully restored castle with an adventurous ladder to the castle tower.

The immediately adjacent castle Itkon was built by the same family. After their extinction, the Lords of Eptingen took over their property. In addition, around 1250 they built the castle Bischofstein. Later, as usual, they handed them over to the Bishop of Basel and returned them as a fief. The family was now called von Bischofstein. The castle was destroyed during the earthquake of 1356. Originally it was assumed that it was rebuilt. However, this assumption is doubtful as it is due to misstatements of glass finds. Presumably, the castle was thus left to decay. In 1560, after several changes of ownership, the ruin was transferred to the city of Basel.

The first historically driven excavations took place from 1914 to 16, they were continued in 1926. In 1937 and 38, the castle was finally completely uncovered and renovated.

The ruin Bischofstein lies on Sissacher soil in the area of the municipal boundary to Böckten, on the Chienberg. It is easy to reach on hiking trails and footpaths (among others from the Sissacherfluh).

Beautifully made ruin, the ladder high on the tower and you have a nice view.
