At Hayingen-Münzdorf one or two times a year the coalman still layers his kiln to produce charcoal in the traditional way. Passion and tradition are closely linked here in the Swabian Alb biosphere region.
In the past, the profession of charcoal burner was very important, today it is almost extinct. Almost every village used to have its own coal mine. The charcoal was appreciated for its high calorific value, especially blacksmiths and glaziers needed to reach the required high temperatures. Therefore, the charcoal was also called the "black gold". Here in Hayingen-Münzdorf this almost 1000-year-old tradition is maintained. For more than 10 days the charcoal burner has to check his kiln every two hours in order to ensure the correct burnup. During this time he lives and sleeps in the Köhlerhütte directly at the Kohlenmeiler.Wer experience this event and would like to receive extensive information, which should join a guided tour of the Alb guides. A highlight which is particularly recommended. The kiln is lit 2-3 times a year. Then there are very good Göckele, but only if ordered in advance the day before. However, red sausage is always available from the charcoal grill, which is also sold
