The chamber ponds (upper and lower) and the entire NSG Pegnitzaue are one of the few wetlands in the arid northern Franconian Alb, which is of fundamental importance for species protection. They are part of the Ranna drinking water protection area. Various information boards are set up around the ponds.

The Kammerweiher provide habitat for many species of dragonflies and amphibians. Similarly, the Federal Nature Conservation Association has identified more than 60 different species of birds, including some endangered species. If you are patient and calm, you can watch them on the wooden observation tower between the two ponds.
