The real landmark of Trento is the Neptune Fountain on the Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) in front of the Cathedral of San Vigilio. The surrounding small streets are still lined with richly decorated palazzi. There are remarkable archaeological collections from Roman times and the Middle Ages to see here.

Piazza del Duomo - center of the city
The baroque Neptune Fountain was built between 1767 and 1769 according to a design by Francesco Antonio Giongo, the hunchback, and stands almost in the middle of the square. The bronze statue of Neptune by Andrea Malfatti is a replica of the stone original, which was removed in 1942. The original statue by Francesco Antonio Giongo is in the courtyard of the city hall.

The square takes its name from the cathedral of Trento, which stands next to it, once the building that gave its name was not the cathedral, but today's Palazzo Pretorio: between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries the name that appears in the documents is "piazza del Comune" (or of the bishop's palace"). From the sixteenth century onwards it takes the name of "Piazza Grande", and from the seventeenth century the cathedral appears, with the forms "piazza del Duomo" and "piazza di San Vigilio".
