The history of the church goes back to the year 851, when a parish church in Waldsee was first mentioned. In 1181, an Augustinian canonry was established at the church. The current church was built in 1479 as a Gothic, three-aisled basilica. From 1709, both the exterior and interior of the basilica were given a baroque makeover. The nave was extended to the west in 1765 and completed with the two mighty double towers. The monastery existed until 1788.
