The Harbour Monument dates back to 63 AD by which time the city had been annexed by the Roman Empire. It was originally dedicated to the general Pompey, but was later rededicated to the Emperor Augustus to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Actium (31BC).
Although now in ruins, the monument was huge: 7,6 m tall and decorated with relief carvings of dolphins and tritons.
